From askart.com: Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935, Robert Moskowitz emerged from the Minimalist movement during the 1970s. His contemporaries were artists like Elizabeth Murray and Susan Rothenberg who were called "New Image Abstraction" painters. Creating his works mostly in oils and pastels, Moskowitz has always concentrated on architectural themes. Skyscrapers and lighthouses dominate his paintings including the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center, and the Flatiron Building. Other subjects include trees, a smokestack and even "The Thinker" by Rodin. His palette is kept dark and there is little action within the work, the focus is the flat, monolithic shape. Moskowitz received his art education at the Pratt Institute of Art where he studied under Bradley Walker Tomlin and Adolph Gottlieb in the 1950s. Moskowitz spent much of his time traveling, living between Nova Scotia and New York he traveled to Spain, Japan, Holland and England. His mother took periodic work as a nurse in Florida to support him and his two sisters. After high school he studied engineering drafting and got a job as a technical illustrator. He started going to museums; a friend encouraged him to enroll in graphic-design courses at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he ended up in an advanced painting class with Adolph Gottlieb and Bradley Walker Tomlin. After graduating from Pratt, he went to spend a year painting passionate, elegant abstract canvases in an artists' colony outside London. But he became interested in Duchamp, Neo-Dadaism and found imagery. And until he met Hermine and fell in love, he went through a period of introspection, being morbid and melancholy. He spent much of his time traveling, living between Nova Scotia and New York.
