Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on board, rendered in the modern style of impressionist painter Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). "Claude Monet" is hand written at lower right. Image depicts a coastal landscape. Two woman dressed in period Victorian clothes, one donning an umbrella peer off into the vast distance. This delicately executed piece is adorned with sophisticated brush strokes for which Monet was so well known. This piece would be a highlight in any fine art collector's gallery. Unframed piece measures approximately 6.25" x 9.75".
Affixed paper label en verso appears to be an old auction tag and reads "LOT 87 - GRAND HOTEL D' ORSAY" and "CLAUDE MONET". Additional ink stamp to the left is largely illegible.
Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840. When he was five years old, the family moved to the port town of Le Havre. For much of his childhood he was considered by both his teachers and parents to be undisciplined and therefore, unlikely to make a success of his life. When he was a fifteen, scornful of the quiet earnest pictures Boudin was painting, they met and Boudin, overcoming the younger man's resistance, urged him to study landscape.
