Judith Nickol (Canada, b. 1900), watercolor and ink entitled, "Second Wife to Rain-in-the-Face Sioux Chief" ca. 1970s CE. An original watercolor and ink portrait of the second wife of a Sioux Chief named Rain-in-the-Face, signed in ink on the lower right by Alberta artist Judith Nickol. The subject is elaborately dressed in a flowing deerskin shawl with a fur collar, long beaded hair ornaments, and a grand quadruple-stranded pectoral with decorated pendants. Beyond this, the focus of the portrait is her face, presenting a serious visage comprised of veristic features. A fine portrait of the second wife to Rain-in-the-Face (Lakota, Ité Omágažu, c. 1835 – September 15, 1905) a warchief of the Lakota Native Americans who was among the leaders to defeat General George Custer and the 7th Cavalry Regiment at the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn. According to legend, his name came about after a childhood fight in which his face was splattered like rain with his Cheyenne adversary's blood.
