Roger de la Corbiere (French artist born in Vienna, 1893-1974), "St. Lunaire" oil on canvas, signed on lower left, ca. 1930s. A beautiful painting of the coastline of Saint Lunaire in Brittany of northwest France, with the sea glistening in natural light by Henry Roger Mascarel de la Corbiere who is best known for such luminous coastal scenes. Born in Vouneuil-sur-Vienne, de la Corbiere was supported early on in his career by modernists Paul Signac (1863-1935) and Maurice Denis (1870-1943). This painting presents a coast just at the moment when day turns to night. Corbiere studied under Russian artist Choltse at the Academy of Fine Arts, and spent his career traveling and painting the coasts of not only France, but also Italy and Spain. He was especially fond of the Riviera. His audience was truly international. Size: 21.5" W x 17.5" H (54.6 cm x 44.4 cm); 28.875" W x 25.5" H (73.3 cm x 64.8 cm) framed

In his native France, Roger de la Corbiere exhibited at the Galerie Katia Granoff (Quai Conti, in Paris, and in Honfleur) as well as at the Gallery Hautecoeur (Rue de Rivoli, Paris). In 1926, he began exhibiting at the Society of Independent Artists. Six years later, in 1932, de la Corbiere became a member and exhibitor at the National Society of Fine Arts, and in 1956 at the Society of French Artists. He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Independants, Salon d’Automne and National Exhibition of Fine Arts. Several his paintings were acquired by the French State in 1925 and are included in the collections of the families of the Maharaja of Kaarpoutala, Comte de Tocqueville, Professor Marion, Andrei Gromyko and the USSR Embassy. In the USA Roger de la Corbiere was represented by Arnot Gallery in New York, where his paintings remain on exhibition.

Provenance: private Palm Desert, California, USA collection; acquired by descent from Maurice (Red) Silverstein who was President of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios) International and Betty Silverstein, known as Betty Bryant, who was a successful actress in Australia prior to marrying Red. Always very active socially in New York City, the couple knew many famous artists, writers, and actors in the 1950's - 1970's.

Painting and frame are both in superb condition. Verso of canvas has darkened a bit which is commensurate with age. Otherwise excellent.
