George Segal Unique Sculpture

SEGAL, George (American, 1924-2000): Julie: Woman on Telephone, plaster cast with found object telephone and wooden support, circa 1971, 52" x 22.5" x 4.5" overall incl. phone cord, plaster portion 20" x 8" x 11.5", 40" x 20.9" x 14.5" including backing but excluding phone cord, unsigned, inscribed and dated by a later hand in ink (or perhaps reinforced over a signature) to the interior. Accompanied by a 1972 Rotterdam Segal exhibition catalogue inscribed to her "For Julie, in warm friendship, Helen and George Segal, March 7, 1972 and a copy of an 8.12.2019 email from the George and Helen Segal Foundation written by the artist's daughter Rena confirming the work is by Segal with the subject's last name and business name redacted by our firm per the direction of the heirs (see below).

Provenance: Julie worked in a Greater New York business with offices in New Jersey and Manhattan. According to her Florida heirs this was a gift from the artist. Julie owned the business and had an office where she was constantly on the telephone. Segal's daughter Rena remembers Julie's family business and her father using Julie's services frequently. Julie's heirs have specified her last name and business name not be made available however the Segal Foundation was provided with her complete name and business identity during the authentication request process. The Foundation stated that the artist's name inscription in the interior is not a Segal signature. There is no archival reference to this work. The Foundation has additionally stated that this is not a maquette for a multiple edition.

Condition
Dirty estate discovery condition, hand crack, thinner short arm crack, other age related plaster issues, very dusty with surface dirt, note wooden support is not plastered and appears to have adhesive residue, perhaps the support was being primed for plaster, etc. Sculpture hangs on the wall, it has been photographed at an angle for increased construction and condition viewing.
