Description
Monumental Mystery Brutalist Sculpture

Eye Totem, circa 1970, patinated sheet steel, iron and bronze or gilt metal penetrated by rebar, 89.5 inches high, unsigned.

Fabulous single owner provenance: According to the original now retired Palm Beach County, Florida owner the statue was seen on exhibition in a regional Northeastern U.S. museum perhaps about 1970 by her and her late husband situated on the landing between two floors of exhibits so that it was a focal point of the show. Her husband inquired about its availability, was put in contact with the artist and purchased it after the show. The artist drove it to their Florida home and installed it in front of an atrium window while wearing coveralls - but the wife could not recall the artist or museum by name, only the circumstances of discovering and purchasing it. We personally removed this Mid-Century Modern abstract monolith from her residence.

Note: This has been the constant subject of conversation in our warehouse since it arrived. Perhaps it's by a New Hope artist in the circle of Paul Evans and Phillip Lloyd Powell or the work of James Bearden although Vandevoorde and Lee Bontecou also come to mind.
