Slavery in Antebellum Tennessee: "One Negro Man Lem aged 26 Years…"
1p handwritten document from Shelby County, Tennessee dated July 24, 1824, outlining the possessions of recently deceased resident Ellen Powell. On blue-ruled pale blue bifold paper, the interior pages blank. Signed by George R. Powell, the Powell Estate Administrator, and by Jonathan B. Trezevant, Clerk, at bottom. Docketed on the fourth page. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. Clean, clear, and easy to read. 7.875" x 10.125".
Entitled "An inventory of the Personal Estate of Elen Powel Decd renderd August Term 1834", the probate inventory lists four slaves:
"To wit
One Negro Man Lem aged 26 Years
" " Woman Cloa " 22 "
" " Boy child John " 3 "
" " Woman Mary " 38 ".
Other items cataloged as part of Ellen Powell's estate included a "Rockaway Carriage, Horse and Mule…[and] Wagen" as well as $448.34 in cash.
Shelby County, Tennessee is located in central Tennessee and encompasses the city of Memphis. In 1850, the average price of a slave was $400. Male slaves like 26-year-old Lem consistently fetched higher prices, while children like 3-year-old John, or the elderly, the infirm, or the recalcitrant, did not.
