Description
1870 1st ed Life of Charles Dickens Mudfog Papers Peterson Controversy Mackenzie
“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”
― Charles Dickens
A rare first edition of the ‘Life of Charles Dickens’ by Mackenzie is an early and thorough biography of Dickens published a couple of months after the great author's death. It contains several uncollected writings such as Dickens' memoir of Thackeray, Dickens' will, and the first book appearance of the Mudfog Papers.
This 1870 first edition also includes the "The Dickens Controversy" – a controversy in which T.B Peterson published Dickens works in America without permission from Harper. Without admitting it, Peterson provides evidence that he did indeed pirate Dickens' works until 1859, when he arranged with Harper to reprint A Tale of Two Cities (Podeschi).
