Description
1850 1st ed American Notes by Charles Dickens Travelogue Slavery Corruption
“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”
― Charles Dickens
‘American Notes’ is one of Charles Dickens’ lesser-known works. This travelogue details his trip to North American in early 1842 in which he writes as a tourist; however, this work also was the inspiration for some of his more popular works such as ‘Martin Chuzzelwit’. It should be noted, though, that Dickens was quite critical of the United States on his trip. He discusses the severity of slavery and the corruption of owning slaves in a ‘free’ country. Ultimately, Dickens used ‘American notes’ as a platform to discuss the problems with American, rather than praising it.
Beginning in 1847, Dickens’ novels were mass produced in what was called ‘cheap editions’. However, these printings are by no means considered ‘cheap’. This remains true with this 1850 printing of ‘American Notes’ – a rare first single volume edition (editions prior to this were published in two volumes).
