"Great Expectations / Pictures From Italy / American Notes", by Charles Dickens, New Illustrated Edition published by G.W. Carleton & Co., New York, MCCCCLXXVI (1876).
Embossed hard boards, original green cloth, gold stamped spine; 5" x 7.1/2"; frontispiece with tissue guard [the tissue guard is slightly stained]; 833 pages + 11 plates on heavy paper [blank versos] +publisher's catalog dated 1876, a few page corner folds, 8 pages in the middle have bent or broken upper page corners [see photos]; very good condition.
Marcus Clayton Stone (1840-1921) was an English painter. He was the son of the artist Frank Stone. Marcus was trained by his father and began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, before he was eighteen. A few years later he illustrated, with much success, books by Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, and other writers who were friends of his family. Stone was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1877, and Academician in 1887. One of his canvases is in Tate.
