Before the Hardy Boys and the Bobsey Twins, there was Walter, who traveled to Egypt, Damascus, Samaria, Constantinople, Athens, and other exotic destinations, and regaled the world with his adventures abroad in "Walter's Tours in the East".Daniel Clarke Eddy (1823-1896) was a clergyman and author.

Eddy was a well-known public orator and author of popular travel books and religious advice books for young people. Among these books of morality are "The Young Man's Friend" (1850) and "The Young Woman's Friend" (1858), in which he argues that women ought to be taught subjects usually only taught to men, including political economy, the sciences, and the practical and theoretical applications of religion.
