Hosken, James; Claxton, Christopher. THE LOGS OF THE FIRST VOYAGE, MADE WITH THE UNCEASING AID OF STEAM, BETWEEN ENGLAND AND AMERICA, BY THE GREAT WESTERN, OF BRISTOL. Bristol: at the Mirror Office by John Taylor, [1838.] 9.5" x 6". [4], vi, [1], 76, [1] pp., + folding lithographed map, tipped in slip ("The assumed quantity of coals...."), and errata slip tipped in at rear. Very much as issued, in original wrappers with minor soiling, spine portion lacking but all intact, some light chipping/fraying, upper corners bumped, contents with a few instances of minor/light foxing, mild to moderate age-tone (consistent throughout.) In all a nice example, remaining in its original form. ************************ FIRST EDITION. THE SS GREAT WESTERN WAS THE FIRST STEAMSHIP BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR TRANSATLANTIC TRAVEL. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a prominent figure in the history of engineering, she was launched in the Summer of 1837. For a short period, she enjoyed the distinction of being the largest passenger ship in the world as well as the largest steamship in the world. Quite rare – RBH records only 2 auction appearances in the last 100 years.
