1851 1ed Glimpse of the Great Western Republic Cunynghame Travel Exploration USA
An exceptionally rare first edition of the Sir Arthur Augustus Thurlow Cunynghames 19th-century North American travel narrative entitled, A Glimpse of the Great Western Republic. This work was written from Cunynghames personal experience traveling throughout the United States in 1850 after being granted military leave while stationed in Canada. According to Cunynghames notes he claims to have traveled ~5300 miles in 53 days while visiting over 30 different cities and towns in both the Northern and the Southern states. Notable contents include his observations from each location he visited such as the wildlife, lodgings, restaurants and cuisine, cultural norms and customs, scenery, entertainment, and much more! Notably he describes his experiences witnessing the ownership and utilization of slaves and his personal discomfort and disinterest in it, calling it a “curse.” A fascinating explorational read across pre-Civil War, 19th-century America.
