Description
1858 1st eds David Livingstone Travels in Africa + Journals Waller Exploration
“I will go anywhere, provided it be forward.”
― David Livingstone
A rare pairing of the two most iconic books on David Livingstone’s life and ministry!
David Livingstone was a Scottish medical missionary known for his exploration in South Africa and ministry to local tribes throughout Central and South Africa. Through the mid-19th-century, South Africa was completely unknown to Europeans, so Livingstone’s mission brought light to more than just spreading the gospel. According to ‘Printing and the Mind of Man’,
“The geographical results of his journeys were of supreme importance and made it possible to fill in great stretches of the maps of Central Africa which hitherto had been blank”
Livingstone discovered the Zambesi River and Victoria Falls (which he named), parts of Angola, and Mozambique; met with and observed the Hottentot. He was also able to discover some of the most devastating instances of slave trade, which propelled his abolitionist ideals.
This lot features Horace Waller’s edition of ‘The Last Journals of David Livingstone’ as well as Livingstone’s own book ‘Travels and Researches in South Africa’.
