Description
This mask is quite an uncommon example from the Kwagh-Hir masquerade of the Tiv people, Nigeria, Africa. Carved wood with a highly stylized human face, accented with a bright green paint and with the addition of the human hair eye brow and Mustache, it is quite a striking example. Obvious handling and field use, such masks have only come to light recently as this is a living tradition born of the political and social chaos that followed the independence of Nigeria in 1960. Often monstrous in appearance, each of the innumerable characters of the Kwagh-Hir has allegorical meanings familiar to audience members of the rural Tiv countryside. The mask measures 12 x 7.5 inches ( 15 inches tall on custom display stand which is included.)
