Robert Gates (b. 1906 Detroit, MI; d. 1982, Alexandria, VA) studied at the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and for a time at the Art Students League in New York City before moving to Washington, DC in 1930. While living in DC, he continued taking classes, this time at the Phillips Gallery Art School, where he eventually became assistant director of the program under C. Law Watkins. He also worked on commissions for the U.S. Treasury Department under the New Deal, completing post office murals in Bethesda and Oakland Maryland, as well as Lewisberg, West Virginia. During the war he served in a civilian capacity within the Office of Naval Intelligence, working on projects involving camouflage and cartography. After the war, he was hired onto the faculty of American University in 1946, becoming chair in 1954.Prior to becoming a founding member of the Jefferson Place Gallery, he exhibited at Franz Bader Gallery, and was included in several Area Annuals, hosted by the Corcoran.
