Enamel on metal, possibly copper. 22 x 20 in. (framed). The following was taken from her obituary: Dorene Willis Zalis, 55, who was an artist and a breeder of champion dogs, died of cancer June 29 at her home in Rockville.As an artist, Mrs. Zalis did pictures, jewelry and sculpture. She worked primarily in enamel, but often combined it with other media. She created jewelry as well as large pieces. She continued to work until her death.She was a founding member of the Enamelists Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria and a charter member of the National Enamelist Guild. She also was a member of the American Craft Council.Her work over the years included commissions for a number of medallions. Her pieces were exhibited in Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as in Washington and elsewhere in the United States.In the world of show dogs, she was a breeder of Polski Owczarek Nizinny. Known as Pons, they are Polish sheep dogs. Mrs. Zalis entered her dogs in rare breed shows, and one of her dogs became the first international champion of the breed in the United States. Another was the first to obtain best-in-show status.
