John Schofield Boldly Signed Letter, 1893
Bi-fold typed letter signed, 5" x 8". Typed to rectos with verso blank. Dated "April 7, 1893", and boldly signed by Schofield with a large 3.5" signature as "J M Schofield". Paper toned with repairs to separation along folds.
A lovely thank you letter in response to an invitation to the Old Guard Reunion dinner and regretfully declines.
His letter is shown below in part:
"Hon George S. Boutwell,
… thank you for your kind note … (for) the invitation of the Old Guard to their Reunion dinner in Philadelphia … and for your complimentary request that I will response to the toast "The Army and Navy of the United States" … but in any event I must beg to be excused …"
Schofield's illustrious career as an American soldier spanned major commands during the American Civil War, serving as U.S. Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant, and Commanding General of the United States Army.
