[SIGNER]. LANGDON, John (1741-1819). Letter signed ("John Langdon"). Portsmouth, NH. 16 July 1762. [With:] LANGDON, Betsy. ALS 1763.
1 1/2 pages, 9 1/4 x 15 in., creased throughout, with several small separations, some partly repaired, minor staining, area of loss to left edge. Verso with faint inscription reading "Copy Letter & Woodbury 1762."

Langdon writes about the sale of rum and sugar, noting the relationship between supply and demand. In part: "Rum is extreemly [sic] low here as well as on the Continent it's as plenty as it well can be..." He then writes about some business he has transacted on behalf of the unknown recipient, including the possible sale of a boat:
"Your boat I got with much ado with out oars she laid on wharf 4[?] months almost ruined. I offer'd her for 160 [indecipherable] but oculd not get it. Manchel would not take her so at last I shipt her to west Indies on my own di[me?]

[With:] LANGDON, Betsy. ALS ("Betsy Langdon") to her brother, John Langdon. 14 February 1763. One page, 8 x 8 1/2 in., creased throughout, with small losses, and several repaired separations. Addressed on integral leaf.

Betsy writes to her brother about a dance.

John Langdon was chosen as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, becoming one of the signers of the United States Constitution. He also served as one of the first two US senators from New Hampshire, and later as the 3rd governor of New Hampshire.
