Anton Chekhov ALS sent from Yalta the Same Year Uncle Vanya was Staged for the Moscow Art Theatre

1p ALS inscribed overall in Russian and signed by celebrated Russian playwright Anthon Chekhov (1860-1904) at bottom right. Written in Yalta, the Crimean resort overlooking the Black Sea, on February 14, 1900. Chekhov has inscribed the pale blue stationery recto, and the integral address leaf verso as "Moscow. His Excellency Ivan Vasilevich Tsinger. Karetnyi Ryad. The Art Theater." Bearing two philatelic markings and part of a stamp verso. Expected paper folds and weathering. Mounting residue verso, else near fine. 3.875" x 6.625".

"My dear Ivan Vasilevich!









I do not have the portrait that my sister showed you. Not as reference, and in the photos either. I will not be back in the city soon, so I handled it by phone and the photographer assured me that the portrait could be ready in 2-3 days. I asked that, without wasting any time, to send me a card on which the photograph will be pasted, I will receive it tomorrow and sign it, and in this way you will be sent my portrait with the signature.

Chekhov's letter recipient Ivan Vasilyevich Tsinger was most likely the son of V.Y. Tsinger, a math professor. He was a follower of Tolstoy's teachings, and worked as a stagehand at the Moscow Art Theater. The name "Tsinger" is mentioned in the letters of Knipper-Chekhov to Anton Pavlowich. At this time, no direct letters from Chekhov to Tsinger are known to exist. There is one letter that Ivan Vasilyevich Tsinger sent to Chekhov found in the collection of the State Lenin Library.
Anton Chekhov was a Russian journalist, poet, and playwright. His promising writing career was curtailed by his premature death of tuberculosis in 1904. Before then, however, he produced some of the most highly praised works of twentieth-century theater: The Seagull (1896), Uncle Vanya (1899-1900), Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard (1904). Of these, Three Sisters was composed at Chekhov's retreat in Yalta called the White Dacha. Chekhov lived at the villa with his mother, sister, pet dogs, and tame cranes.
