Katharine Lee Bates, Signed America The Beautiful Typed Manuscript.
Typewritten Manuscript Signed and Inscribed, "Katharine Lee Bates, With Friendly Greetings to Mr. and Mrs. Benson and Barbara," one page, quarto, undated. The typewritten manuscript is of Bates' patriotic hymn, America the Beautiful. Matted in America's colors, federal blue and crimson red. In an antiqued gilt frame 12" x 16"
"0 beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
0 beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
0 beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
0 beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown they good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!"
Bates wrote the original version of America the Beautiful in 1893. As a professor at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, Bates spent that summer session lecturing at Colorado College. She joined an expedition to the summit of Pikes Peak (over 14,000 feet high), and was so exhilarated by the view that she hastily scribbled the first four stanzas into a notebook. "When I saw the view, I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse." The poem first appeared in print in The Congregationalist, a weekly journal on July 4, 1895, and the final version was complete in 1913.
Throughout the years, the poem has been sung to a variety of music. Today, America the Beautiful is almost exclusively sung to Samuel A. Ward's Materna. The poem passed on Bates' intense love for her country to all Americans, and over the years has become the country's unofficial second national anthem.
