Anthony Thieme Eur. 1888-1954 Dutch Landscape with Windmill, Oil on CanvasSigned on Verso "A. Thieme" 21" x 27.5" Framed 17" x 24" ActualProvenance: Helen Stratton, married to Warren Stratton, lived in Rosindale, Massachusettes. Warren was serving during the First World War and Helen Stratton stayed in Rosindale. Money was Scarce so she took in a boarder when possible. One specific boarded was a young man from Holland and Helen said it was 'a pleasant arrangement' while he stayed at her house. He wasnt doing too well as young artist in America, he was 'paving his way'. He would help out by doing small jobs around the house, but sometimes couldnt pay the for his room and board. He eventually moved out when Warren Stratten came home from war, and to pay for his remaining debts, left Helen with two paintings- She asked him to sign them on the back, which he did. She lived with the paitings for the rest of her life until her son, Cliffton, inherited one of the paintings.Literature: Anthony Thieme was born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1888. His legal dutch name was Antonius Johannes Thieme, which he anglicized when he moved to the United States, where he became a citizen in 1936.
Condition
Surface dirt. Discolored varnish. Stress cracks. Stretch or bar lines visible. Painting would benefit from cleaning.
