Description
Chinese porcelain potted in a celestial form, bulbous body with round shoulder gently tapered toward tall cylindrical neck, leading to slightly wider rim; raised upon a flat concaved base. The exterior delicately decorated in with famille rose hand painting, of branching bright color ripe pomegranates and Buddha's hand citrons abundant tree and its foliage against clean white underglaze ground.
The Under-base bears a reign mark, a six underglaze blue seal script characters reign mark, Made of the years Yongzheng Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
Measurements: 21" H x 15"Diam.
LOT NOTES:
The Buddha's hand citron (Citrus Chirocarpus) derives its Chinese name Fo Shou and the alternative English name of "Finger Citron" from its odd shape. It symbolizes "Much Happiness" and is used as an offering for the altar during the Chinese New Year.
The pomegranate (shiliu) signifies the sixth month of the lunar calendar and, because of its many seeds, represents fertility, offspring and descendants.
For this reason, the pomegranate is an important symbol in Chinese marriages.
The first character (shi) has the same pronunciation as the word for "generations" (shi) and thus strengthens the meaning as generations of descendants.
Elegantly displayed upon a carved hardwood stand.
