Description
A Very rare and fascinating old example of the Mbole sculpture known as "Ofika" , the sculpture seems to be standing on his tip toes, a posture associated with public hangings. Tribunals and executions by hanging are a feared prerogative of the all powerful Lilwa men's association, which controls government, the judiciary and other aspects of life. These figures are hung by ropes in sacred places, and shown to newly initiated members of the Lilwa. They are supposed to warn new initiates about exposing secrets of the Lilwa association. The sculpture figure is well worn darkened wood with a mineral pigment on face and chest. The sculpture has been custom mounted and measures 17.5 inches tall. Ex De Zwaan, Amsterdam., Ex Austrian private collection
