Description
This is a very nice and quite large older example of a Antelope headdress from carved wood, encrusted dark reddish-brown patina, open almond-shaped eyes, crowned by pointed striated horns.antelope masks "karikpo" are used at the beginning of the farming season in ceremonies honouring the local founding ancestor. The mask is worn by a dancer who incorporates racing and graceful acrobatics into his performance and is accompanied by a dancer wearing an "ugly" mask who behaves in a wild and erratic fashion. The masquerades perform acrobatic feats requiring considerable agility. This is especially true in the case of those wearing horned masks , such as this example where the masquerader must jump especially high when performing the customary somersaults. This example measures 22 x 6 inches. We will also include a display stand.
