This is a very rare and fascinating old Yoruba Opon Igede Ifa Divination bowl with fitted lid of circular form, weathered brown patina and decorated with the faces of Eshu, the Yoruba "Trickster "deity, and with grooved frames carved on side, and a charming raised turtle on lid. Inside this sacred vessel is a circular compartment surrounded by 5 additional compartments. This old vessel was used by the "Babalawo" or Diviner priest to store all of his sacred divination implements, including Agere Ifa, or kola nut bowls, trays, sacred Kola nuts, and other precious objects. Old and authentic Yoruba objects this size are difficult to come by, and this vessel has a very impressive provenance. Previously in the noted collection of Harry A Franklin of Beverly Hills. When Mr Franklin's collection sold in 1990. including this vessel, it was the highest grossing sale of African Art EVER! This vessel was previously sold by Sotheby's auction house in 1990.
