Aus der gleichen Hand wie die bekannte Schale die Hans Witte 1984 in "IFA and ESU iconography of order and disorder" (Kunsthandel Luttik. Plate 85) wie folgt beschrieben hat: "The voluminous body of the woman supporting the cup for the palm nuts, looks like a blackened calabash of Eshu, painted with three concentric circles and is at the same time an image of protective motherhood."

agere-ifa genannte Schalen werden im allgemeinen als priesterliche Kultgefässe für Palmkerne verwendet, die bei der Orakelbefragung unabdinglich sind.

Am Hof werden Schalen auch als Prestige-Behälter benutzt um daraus Besuchern Kolanüsse anzubieten oder um auf einem Schrein stehend Opfergaben für Gottheiten aufzunehmen.

Die eigentliche Schale der Skulptur wird immer von variantenreichen figürlichen Szenerien aus der Mythologie der Yoruba getragen. Die dargestellten Figuren sollten die Feierlichkeiten der Opferhandlung sowie bestimmte Anliegen der Besitzer verdeutlichen.
