Description
Painting by Ethel Edwards, Tuaregs, 1948. The painting is 34"x44" in a frame 34.5"x44.5". This painting has a label from the Grand Central Art Galleries, an important gallery that showed modern art in NYC in the 20th century. //////////////////////////////////////// The Tuareg people are about 2 million nomadic people who live across the Sahara Desert, including in the North African countries of Mali, Niger, Libya, Algeria and Chad. The Tuaregs are part of the Berber group of people, and they are largely Muslim.(From Wiki):"The Tuareg people are a large Berber ethnic confederation. They principally inhabit the Sahara in a vast area stretching from far southwestern Libya to southern Algeria, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. Traditionally nomadic pastoralists, small groups of Tuareg are also found in northern Nigeria." //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// This work came from the collection of painting, sculpture and jewelry by Xavier Gonzalez and his artist wife, Ethel Edwards, that was given to the Art Students League of New York, by the Gonzalez family after Xavier's passing, and is being sold to raise funds for future student scholarships. The sale of this object will directly benefit the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Gonzalez Memorial Fund. Both Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards were at one time teachers at the Art Students League. David Killen Gallery is proud and excited to partner with the Art Students League of New York in selling these works, which have been in storage for a number of years, and prior to that, in the collection of the Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards family. ////////////// Ethel Edwards, (1914–1999), was an American painter, collage artist, illustrator, and muralist born in Opelousas, Louisiana[1] and died on January 24, 1999.Education[edit]In 1933 she entered Newcomb College in New Orleans where she studied with Xavier Gonzalez. Edwards later taught at the Truro Center of the Arts. The Xavier Gonzalez and Ethel Edwards Travel Grant given by The Art Students League of New York was first awarded in 2002; it provides stipends to artists for travel in Spain.Edwards was an instructor at the Art Students League.[5]Works.Her papers can be found in the Archives of American Art in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C..Two of her paintings are owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation."
