A fantastic letter by Union General Robert Patterson who describes the taking of Baltimore while commander of his department in 1861. "The message of the first troops through Baltimore after the attack on the Massachusetts 6th is I think stated very accurately in my note, except as to the number which you have rather overrated. Penna Artillery (acting at the time as infantry) commanded by my oldest son…" It was at this time, when Baltimore mobs attacked the Massachusetts troops, that the first soldier of the civil war was killed in combat.
