Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 100 to 500 CE. An extremely expressive pottery mask in the form of a snarling jaguar with almond-shaped eyes presenting bulging round pupils and an open mouth exposing long fangs. His nose is adorned with an ornament, perhaps suggesting that this mask represents a transitioning jaguar shaman figure. Remains of original blue/green pigment grace areas of the surface. Jaguar imagery symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Size: 5.35" W x 3.2" H (13.6 cm x 8.1 cm); 6.45" H (16.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Pearson collection, Denver, Colorado, USA
