Description
French Model 1822/1842 percussion pistol, 7 ¾" barrel, 13 ½" overall, faintly marked on the lockplate "Mre. Rle. de Mutzig", for the Mutzig Arsenal. This Model 1822 was originally constructed as a flintlock weapon, but was converted to percussion, becoming the Model 1842. The lockplate shows spacers where the pan, frizzen, and frizzen spring have been removed and their mounting points filled in. A percussion nipple has been fitted over the original flash hole. A proof mark in the form of a star over "S" appears above the arsenal mark, while the barrel tang is marked "Mle. 1822", while the rear of the barrel bears two serial numbers: "1277" on the left-hand side, and "B8929" at top. The right-had side of the barrel is marked "S 1864" beneath the wood line, believed to be the date of its conversion from flintlock to percussion. Numerous additional proof marks appear around the rear of the barrel. The combination barrel band and side plate are brass, as are the trigger guard and the butt cap, which is marked "G" within a circle and fitted with an iron lanyard ring. The bore is approx. .75-caliber and shows shallow rifling, with a large ramrod secured within a hole in the brass barrel band. The barrel is also fitted with a large, bulbous front sight with a simple notch rear sight at the barrel tang. The stock appears to be of oil-finished walnut, and shows a serious crack to the left-hand side secured by the barrels band and side plate, with additional notable cracks to either side of the wrist. Numerous period repairs to additional cracks have been accomplished with wood pegs and covered with varnish. The barrel shows oxidation overall, with some active rust beneath the wood line, but only minor resultant pitting. The muzzle is slightly deformed, and the bore shows some active rust. The brass fittings show some spots of verdigris, and he barrel band and side plate appear to have been subjected to a period repair which remade each as a separate piece, where they would have originally been manufactured as a single component. The lock mechanism still cocks and fires very strongly. NRA grade fair to good.
