Description
**First Time At Auction**

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A brass triptych traveling icon with three hinged panels depicting various events in the life of Jesus Christ in low-relief; navy-blue and creamy-white enamel inlays accentuate the rich iconography. The far-left panel, clockwise, shows the Annunciation; birth of Jesus; presentation of Jesus in the temple; and scenes from the life of the Holy family. The middle panel shows Christ in the temple; His baptism by St. John; entrance into Jerusalem; and His glorification in Heaven. The right-most panel depicts Christ meeting his disciples after the resurrection; Christ's glorification surrounded by angels; death of the Virgin Mary; and the descent of the Holy Ghost to the enthroned Virgin Mary. Not only beautifully done, but also spiritually rewarding. Size: 11.5" W x 4.125" H (29.2 cm x 10.5 cm).

In order to support traveling priests on missions, bronze and brass religious objects were made that were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through a difficult landscape. These religious articles were widespread in Russia by the 17th century, and are often mentioned in the 19th century writings of Pushkin and Chekhov.
