Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $150**

United States, ca. mid 19th century CE. A special ensemble of antique photographs - 2 daguerreotypes and 2 ambrotypes - in leather Union Cases. The first features a daguerreotype of a gentleman wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and tied cravat, its a leather case embossed with a bouquet of flowers one side. The image is set in an embossed brass mat with a protective glass cover plate, and hexagonal perimeter brass preserver. Next is a daguerreotype of a handsome couple in 3/4 view set in an embossed brass mat with a protective glass cover plate, and a curvilinear perimeter brass preserver. The brown leather case features a rose on the front and a tendrilled blossom on the other. The red velvet facing reads "Carleton Artist Portland" indicating that this daguerreotype was taken by Samuel L. Carleton, the popular daguerreotypist who studied in Boston and relocated to Portland in 1845. Size: 3.75" L x 3.125" W (9.5 cm x 7.9 cm)

Completing this group we have a pair of ambrotypes, each one depicting a gentleman in 3/4 view wearing his Sunday best, set in embossed brass mats with a protective glass cover plate, and perimeter brass preservers, both with decorative leather Union Cases (though missing their front covers).

Condition
The ambrotypes are missing front covers to their leather cases. Daguerreotype with hexagonal brass preserver has a full leather case, though the case shows age wear and is missing one latch. The front and back covers to the Samuel Carleton daguerreotype have separated, but both remain. Both daguerreotypes are in very good condition. The ambrotypes are less well preserved.
