Description
**First Time At Auction**

West Africa, Ivory Coast, We peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden chair from the We peoples of the Ivory Coast. Chairs represent the role of women as mothers and providers of the family, and figure prominently into the initiation rites of young girls with several peoples of the Ivory Coast - We, Baule, Senufo, and Dan. This is an example of an initiation chair from the We which is defined by a rectangular seat and an open back upon four short legs. Covered in lustrous caramel-hued patina, this is a wonderful and well-built example from Western Africa! Size: 16.625" W x 16" H (42.2 cm x 40.6 cm).
