Important Folk Art Portrait Bust of William Seward. Signed J. Bowers, 1861. Carved wood with an old painted surface. Joseph Bowers was a ships figurehead and trade figure carver from NYC. Seward served as Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln from 1861-69. This bust was carved the year of Seward's appointment by Lincoln. Published, Ricco and Maresca, AMERICAN PRIMITIVE, p77. H 16" D 9" W 13"". Ex collection William Greenspon. High-res images available.

Condition
