WILLIAM MATTHEW PRIOR (MAINE / MASSACHUSETTS, 1806-1873), ATTRIBUTED, FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WOMAN, oil on pine panel, bust-length depiction of an attractive sitter wearing Empire-style off-the-shoulder gown, pearl necklace, earrings, and a large tortoiseshell comb, by tradition identified as Maria Brackett of Portland, ME, no signature located. Housed in a period molded giltwood frame. Circa 1835. 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" sight, 18 1/4" x 14 1/2" OA.
Good overall condition with moderate overall crazing and discoloration, very slight bow to panel. Frame with minor wear.
Provenance: The collection of the late Theodore "Ted" and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL.
