Description
Sherman William
William Tecumseh Sherman Early ALS At the Outbreak of The Mexican-American War
Single page autograph letter signed on pale blue paper, 8" x 8.75". Signed by Sherman as "W.T. Sherman". Circa 1846.  Page is lightly toned with expected folds. Strong contrasting ink with a fantastic large 3.5" signature. Letter written to recto and addressed on verso. Light toning along outer edges.
An exceedingly rare letter from this period. Sherman writes to Captain Christopher Q. Tompkins reporting that a mill capable of grinding sufficient wheat and corn can be sent by the next ship, and conveying details of his departure:
"I saw Capt Eaton about the Mill and learned that it could not be ready till next month-however I concluded to see the manufacturer himself and have just done so, and got of him  a portable mill which will grind enough wheat or corn for our party, using the same power as our saw mill...this mill...may be sent out if you deem proper by the next ship, but I have to see to the parts that are indispensable, with duplicates of the parts liable to breakage.
All will be on board the Lexington Monday evening…"
Before Sherman's Famous March to Sea, and at the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, Sherman was a lieutenant in the Company F. third artillery in the New York volunteers. In the spring of 1846, Christopher Q. Tompkins took command of Company F. third artillery.
