Revi, American Pressed Glass and Figure Bottles (Thomas Nelson & Sons, New York, 1964), p. 256 // Jane Shadel Spillman, American and European Pressed Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass (The Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, 1981), p. 281 no. 1107 illus. the opalescent example formerly in the McKearin collection as "Cambridge, Massachusetts, New England Glass Company, ca. 1870-1880", Long considered to be one of the rarest and most desirable of the vast array of pressed glass candlesticks made in the United States from the 1840's to the 1870's, this candlestick was long attributed to the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company, Sandwich, Massachusetts, and dated in the 1840's. Published by the McKearins as a product of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Works, and, in 1954, by the distinguished scholar/dealer James H. Rose as "New England [area], c. 1840-50," the dealer Albert C. Revi corrected the record a decade later when he discovered the papers for the patent for the design of this candlestick that was issued to Henry Whitney for the New England Glass Works, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 10, 1870. The candlestick was made in clear, opalescent, and various other colors, and is extremely rare in any color.
