Pre-Columbian, northwestern Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya, Middle / Late Polychrome periods, ca. 800 to 1550 CE. A fine polychrome ceramic bowl with three mammiform feet, a rounded bottom, a slightly concave exterior rim, and a shallow interior. The feet are hollow and have one large perforation on each side which represent the "eyes" for the raised noses and gaping mouths comprising the depicted abstract faces. The interior of the dish is decorated with elaborate black rectangular motifs, with white dotted circles inside, and set within a red-painted border. The shapes are enclosed within a pair of black border bands which are themselves enclosed within further concentric red-painted circles. The exterior also displays a pair of concentric circles painted in red. Size: 8.1" W x 3.625" H (20.6 cm x 9.2 cm).

Condition
Area of rim repaired from several pieces with one section of restoration, with small chips, resurfacing, overpainting, and adhesive residue along break lines. Age-commensurate surface wear, fading to pigmentation and some decorative elements on feet, with some stable hairline fissures on feet, and light roughness across most interior surfaces. Light earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
