Item Details
Description
A Rarity in Western hands, Lg. Han Tomb FigureThis large Han Dynasty tomb figure is probably unique, it is of about the mid 2nd century A.D., of gray high fired pottery. Apparently an entertainer model of a human midget disguised as a horned demon, an imaginaryzoomophic creation, a common theme in early Chinese Court entertainment. One of some of the large and various figures that were unearthed in the same exceptional area of Emperor Qin's life sized grey pottery army, these excavations only within the last number of decades. From these discoveries and digs, this, lifted from the internet;"The Mausoleum of the Western Han Emperor, Liu Qi, is located at Zhangjiawan Village, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Xian City, Shaanxi Province. It is a joint tomb of Liu Qi, a notable emperor of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-220AD), and his empress, Empress Wang. It was built in the year 153 AD and covers an area of 20 square kilometers (4,942 acres). It is a magnificent and abundant cultural relic, comprising the emperor's tomb, empress' tomb, the south and north burial pits, ceremonial site, human sacrifice graveyard and criminals' cemetery." Of note, all manner of strange and exotic animals and uncommon humans were sought by the Chinese and some other courts of these early times, ex; Albinos, Siamese twins, midgets, etc. This is one of those numerous pieces that 'got away' prior to the clamp down on such in China.. Pictured here are a similar piece called an entertainer, from years past at Skinner's Auction. also, an image of the uncovering of these more common half sized human figures, same digs, many of which got out on the world market. I may have the 'hand' break, I know I have the foot part, somewhere, must find it and it will be given to the any buyer. The visable small white spots are lime or other burial residue. This piece is rare, big and rather heavy. Height: 24.5"
