Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Gelatin silver print
14" x 11"
Atlanta; August 28, 1963

One of the more iconic images of the late civil rights movement leader. Martin Luther King, Jr. was photographed here by Schulke at an SCLC meeting in Atlanta. The two men met in 1958 when Schulke was sent to interview King for a piece for Ebony magazine, and they became friends after talking late into the night. Schulke was already interested in the civil rights movement, and came to document much of the movement and the King family through his photography. His photograph of Coretta Scott King at her husband's funeral was used as the cover image of Life magazine's April 1968 issue.

Condition: Minor creasing at the lower margin edge, else very good.
