Description
A French Rococo period heavily hand carved architectural ornamental plaque. Among the deep scrolls a beautiful young cherub appears in great detail with carved hair and joy filled cheeks. Over its head a large forward scroll below an upward shell form.
Adorning the sides of the plaque are pairs of carved tassles terminating into an acanthus leaf arrangement with the Green Man appearing center. The lower portion of the plaque contains heavily carved fruit on either side and a centered bunch below the green man.
The overall presentation of this piece is fantastic. It retains its original as found presence. Uncleaned, raw unfinished wood without stain or varnish. There are holes within the piece likely used in its past for hanging or mounting either to a wall or a door or other furniture piece.
A Green Man is a sculpture or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the mouth, nostrils, or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found in carvings on both secular and ecclesiastical buildings. The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures from many ages around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities. It is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth each spring.
