New World, New Mexico, USA, Spanish Colonial style, ca. early to mid 19th century CE. A large Cristo figure made from a natural branching tree trunk with a carved face and beard. Two thinner branches extend from the arms, probably where there were once hands attached. Wooden santo carving has been preserved as a folk art in small communities in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. This is a fine example incorporating a natural piece of wood from the region. Size: 21" W x 31.25" H (53.3 cm x 79.4 cm); 35.5" H (90.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Gomez collection, Denver, Colorado, USA

Condition
Extensive signs of wear and handling on surface, with dark patina from touch. Losses to hands and natural cracks in the wood. Small loss to beard.
