Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A powerful cast bronze finial in the form of a rearing horse. The horse is depicted with a finely detailed mane and head. The legs are posed so that the front legs of the horse are raised, the back legs nearly fully extended. A groove on the back and hole drilled through the center may have once been used to attach a rider figure and/or to attach the piece to a larger item. Finials like this one served as decorations on vessels, usually attached mechanically rather than cast. Horse motifs were signs of power and military prowess, symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. Size: 2.8" W x 2.7" H (7.1 cm x 6.9 cm); 3.05" H (7.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Tail is lost; otherwise the piece is in very nice condition, with well preserved details, especially on the head. Deep green patina on surface.
