Original 1954 Dartmouth Winter Carnival Lithograph by Stephen G Chontos, Dartmouth Winter Carnival Feb. 5-6, 1954, Offset Lithograph, Approximate Size: 34 x 21 15/16 Printer: Lithographed in USA, Winthrop Printing & Offset Co., Boston 27, Mass, Steve Chantos (on poster) Stephen G Chantos, Dartmouth Class of 1956. Various tape marks showing through from reverse, discoloration tape marks showing at top of poster, paper loss at push pin holes at corners. Winter Carnival is a long-standing tradition at Dartmouth College that was particularly famous during the 1920s, 1930s,1940s and 1950’s The Dartmouth Outing Club, founded in 1909, organized a winter weekend "field day" in 1910. This was an athletic event centered on skiing, a sport which the Outing Club helped to pioneer and publicize on a national scale In 1911. National Geographic Magazine referred to it as "the Mardi Gras of the North". 2
