Description
Antique hatbox or helmet container from 19th century Japan.Made of thick, quality hide leather, stitched together and with a heavy black lacquer coating on the outside.Gold Armorial panels as ornamentation, with Koumori bats (a symbol of good luck) and insignia cartouche medallions, meandering trim and patterns. Brass hinge and lock up fittings. Interesting, cone form. Paper tag inside, with writing in Japanese in ink. An inscription on the underside as well. Japanese in origin, Meiji period (1868-1912).
