Indian Peace Medals
1757 "Treaty of Easton" or "Duffield" Indian Peace Medal Restrike the First Indian Peace Medal Produced in America
1757 "Treaty of Easton" or "Duffield" Indian Peace Medal. George II Indian Peace Medal. Retrike Struck in Bronze. Julian IP-49. Choice Extremely Fine.
Julian IP-49. Jamieson-8. Eimer-654. Betts-401. Rare Original Dies 1757 George II Indian Peace Medal, 44 mm. Also referred to as the "Treaty of Easton" or "Duffield" Indian Peace Medal. Engraved by Edward Duffield of Philadelphia, this medal was the first peace medal made in America. It was commissioned and presented by the Friendly Association, a group of Pennsylvania Quakers that attempted to mediate negotiations between Delaware Indians and the Pennsylvania Assembly. This pleasing, well detailed medal has light even wear to its natural bronze surfaces with one small contact mark to the right of the top obverse hole and one smaller in the field next to the reverse sun. Attached through the hole at top is a period decorative harvest-gold silk ribbon. Benjamin Franklin and members of the Friendly Association distributed these medals to Native Americans as tokens of goodwill at the Treaty of Easton in 1757. As Eimer states, "During the French-Indian wars in the 1750s, alliances were formed between the British colonial government in Pennsylvania and native American Indian tribes." The reverse design includes a Quaker seated near a fire, offering a peace pipe to an Indian. Quakers presented the original medals to the nearby Indian chiefs.
