Description
This is an old and field used carved wooden mask from the Pende peoples of the Congo, central Africa.A Rare "Mbuyu" mask with with wonderfully exaggerated facial features, skillfully woven grass headdress and some incised designs accented with kaolin clay.Mbuya village masks are used to entertain a community during non-ritual festivities. Once used during mukanda initiation ceremonies to mark the end of male circumcision rituals, mbuya masquerades are now used to highlight a number of characters and roles in Pende society. A very good old example with excellent style and craftsmanship. The mask measures 12 inches tall x 12 inches deep -front to back. Ex~ Private Maryland collection.
