Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A mold-formed applique depicting an actor's mask. The stylized face is composed of almond-shaped eyes with recessed pupils beneath furrowed brows, a bulbous nose with flared nostrils, full lips surrounding a gaping mouth, and a vertically-striated beard. The tall pate is covered with a radiant cap, and the hollow verso enables the applique to be hung and displayed. Traces of original white pigment are visible on many areas of the face. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.6" W x 4.3" H (6.6 cm x 10.9 cm).

Condition
Repaired from multiple large pieces with some losses and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small nicks to cap, face, beard, and verso, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and traces of original pigmentation throughout.
