Description
Extremely scarce early edition of one of the most influential books of the 18th century. Appears to be the second English edition. The Spirit of Laws. Translated from the French of M. Desecondat, Baron De Montesquieu. With Corrections and Additions Communicated By the Author (two volumes). Published 1751 by G. And A. Ewing and G. Faulkner of Dublin. Probably very old rebind as spine labels are separate layer. Full leather. Five raised ribs on spine. Edges decorated. VOLUME 1- three tips showing; joints cracked; front hinge cracked but holding. Cover not dry and remarkably free of scuffs except for a couple small ones near edges. One small soil spot on rear cover. Spine drying with few scuffs; chipping at top spine. Interior complete with minor foxing as expected but binding tight and straight. VOLUME 2 - Front cover detached. Three tips worn through; rear joint cracked; rear hinge cracked but holding nicely. Covers similar to Volume 1 without soil spot. Interior complete with minor foxing but binding tight and straight. 392 and 422 pps with 46-page index. 5.5 x 8.25
